Experience France: Unbeatable DFDS Offers for Your Next Trip

History Of DFDS

With his 1866 proposal to combine four Danish steamship firms into DFDS (Det Forenede Dampskibs-Selskab), C.F. Tietgen had a clear goal: The new business made possible commerce that was expanding rapidly in the wake of industrialization, resulting in prosperity for everybody. In those days, the UK was the industrial locomotive of the globe, supplying coal and products to the energy- and textile-hungry markets of Scandinavia and beyond. Conversely, the steam ships in these nations allowed farmers to access the UK’s quickly expanding food and raw material market.

With the expansion it fostered, DFDS grew rapidly. About 1900, DFDS steam ships linked the new Russian industrial region surrounding St. Petersburg with farmers across the Black Sea. Through the establishment of routes to the USA, DFDS helped European farmers transition from being exporters of animals to producers and exporters of processed goods like butter and bacon. In addition, DFDS linked cities in Denmark and Scandinavia with the rest of the globe and with themselves. The foundation for all of this was a fleet of over 120 ships, which was at the time one of the biggest in the world.

DFDS moved people hoping to find better opportunities in the United States. DFDS maintained supplies of vital food and coal to Europeans who would have otherwise gone hungry and without a means of heating their houses throughout the world wars. There were jobs and industry maintained. Following the war, DFDS‘ ships—many of which now had diesel engines—kept transporting people and commodities between the UK and continental Europe, the Mediterranean and Scandinavia, and Iceland. The first to create a ro-ro service at the end of the 1960s, DFDS made it possible for trucks and trailers transporting industrial goods to be shipped more effectively.

The same aim drove the development of the logistics operations starting in 1972. Door-to-door connecting of individuals and companies to promote growth for everyone. Dan Transport was one of Northern Europe’s biggest forwarding and logistics firms until DFDS bought it in 1998. To concentrate business resources on shipping, DFDS Dan Transport was sold in 2000. Following the 2010 purchase of Norfolkline and a number of logistics acquisitions, DFDS once again underwent a metamorphosis to become a distinctive European Shipping and Logistics Group offering essential infrastructure services throughout Europe.

Today, DFDS has firmly committed to the growth of digital capabilities in order to carry out its original mission: They move for everyone to grow.
